Pardubice represents a Czech Late Gothic and Renaissance residential aristocratic city, the construction and artistic development of which occurred in the first half of the 16th century. The preservation zone includes the historic centre of the city demarcated by the original town walls, the chateau grounds with a defensive system of ramparts, and the area of the former water moat. The most opulent building on the town square is the neo-Renaissance town hall, in front of which towers the Marian Pillar. Preserved from the town fortifications is the sixty metre high Green Gate. Church buildings include the Church of St. Bartholomew, the Late Gothic Assumption of the Virgin Mary, and the Baroque Church of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary with sculptures by M. B. Braun.
